Voodoo Lounge Sessions

Honest Man (4:22)

Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin Ireland, November-December, 1993. Instantly recognizable as a classic Stones riff and arrangement. Maybe too Stonesy for Voodoo Lounge, but one has to wonder how this song could have been left off the CD when it is stronger than several of the released songs. Driving guitar and harp throughout.

There are two variations of the same take:

1st Version: Jagger's vocal is more prominent in the mix in the 1st version than the 2nd version.

2nd Version: There is an added Richards guitar overdub in the right channel that is "up" in the mix. It flat out cooks. The lyrics on both takes are exactly the same.

Honest Man

DAT 30, Numbers 8 & 9

Well there's a hole in my chest where my heart was

The body refuses to die

And the rain's coming down

And I walk in, it looks like it's set for a night

Well there's a train crawling in at the station

And it's wheels gonna take me home

When love walks in, and love walks out

I move into the danger zone

Well I won't breath a word about it

Cross my heart and hope to die

I give you all the love, in this mighty world

Stand up and testify

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Stand by my word

Don't know no other

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Go tell my friend

Don't blow my cover

Blazing Jagger harp solo...

Now there's some wild talkin' innuendo

There's some nasty nail biting games

When the sun comes up, look me right in the eye

And tell me you don't feel ashamed

Well I won't breath a word about it

Cross my heart and hope to die

When love walks out, and love walks in

The fall man is gonna cry

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Go tell my friend

Don't blow my cover

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Go tell my friend

Don't blow my cover

Richards burns up the right channel on the 2nd Version

Now there's a hole in my chest where my heart was

And nothin's gonna stop the pain

And when the train pull out

The night comes in, thinkin' of me once again

And I won't breath a word about it

I know I'm gonna take the blame

Give you all the love, in this mighty world

If you just let me clear my name

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Go tell my friend

Don't blow my cover

I'm a honest man

I'm a honest lover

Tell my friend

Don't know no other

Yeah

All right

Yeah

All right

Yeah

Come on, come on

Come on, come on

Come on, come on

Mmmmm, Haaaright, Haaaright

mmmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm

Well, mmmmm, mmmmm

RELEASE THE 2nd VERSION OF THIS SONG, AND DON'T MESS WITH THE GUITAR MIX!

Ivy League (3:11 & 6:12)

A well known set of phenomenal outtakes was issued not long after the commercial release of "Voodoo Lounge". The sound quality and revealing content of the evolving music being rehearsed seemed like a taboo. The source of these low generation tapes and the incredible music they contain certainly adds to the aura of mystery and contraband that surrounds the recording.

The simple run through of Ivy League from the "Voodoo Stew" box set has a very appealing melody, and a lyric that thematically has potential. A more advanced take with a slower tempo from the original "Voodoo Brew" release actually loses some of the raw excitement evident in the earlier demo. Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin Ireland, November-December, 1993.

There are two different takes of this song in circulation:

* 1st Version (3:11): Keyboard track with vocal

** 2nd Version (6:12): Instrumental track with a faint off-mic. vocal with harmonica. This track actually has quite a bit of production, and is also a keyboard dominated song.

Found On CD's:

** "Voodoo Brew" Box Set Vigotone, Disc Three, Track 3.

* "Voodoo Stew" Box Set Vigotone, Disc Three, Track 13.

The Words (1st Version):

As far as the vocals go this is a rough take with Jagger really just sounding out the melody to get a feel. A bit difficult to decipher in places...

A lovely voice ID's the track:

OK?

Ivy League

I'm waitin' for you, I'm makin' town

I'm walkin' for you, over ground

I won't see you walkin' away

I can't stand you actin' this way ... I want

I wanna see you, all the way at all

I'm in pain hidin' the whole way all the place at all

Ahhh...

Mmmm me I, I'm soakin' there, ahhh now over 'round

I won't see you walkin' away, I won't see you every night

And, I'm not sayin', oh

Going away you

Runnin', runnin' away you

All the way, at all

I think, runnin' to hear you

I'm glad, I don't hear you

All the way at all

I'm sick

I soakin' down

I'm lookin' for you

Up a town

I'm livin' with you, and zip your gone

Everybody hittin' bottom

Yeah, I won't see you walkin' my way

I won't catch you to me every day

I won't see you you walkin' away, at all

eeehhh

I won't cry

I won't lie

I know everybody's going down to cry

I won't cry

Gemstones

"Voodoo Brew" and "Stew" have been released in a variety of repackaging, including European versions and single and double CD compilations. The quality of the originals and knock-offs are excellent stereo. You just can't go wrong with the sources from these sessions.

Missing In Action

A completed 1st Version of this song would make for a very interesting release. Maybe this will be included on an outtakes compilation one of these days. The vocal take ends abruptly, and just as Jagger is about to take the improvised lyric in a new direction. The keyboard line presents a tension in the song that gives it dimension and depth.

Zip Mouth Angel (3:28)

Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin Ireland, November-December, 1993. A lovely ballad with a simple open tuned guitar, tom-tom drum, maracas, and backing keyboard. The song has a Caribbean feel, and was perhaps inspired by sessions in Barbados.

"Voodoo Stew" Box Set Vigotone, Disc Three, Track 16.

Charlie:

Can we play now?

Yeah, 2, 3 and ... (under his breath)

<A wood body Dobro Guitar begins to strum (probably Jagger on guitar)>

I went up to the island to, see that Angel was home

I went, out to the station to, see that the train was a blue

I was lookin' for my ba-by, well, see that my Angel was home

Instrumental Bridge

I, called up your father to, see that the train where does it go

And he offered me your sister, but she's hooked here for later was so

And I'm lookin' for my baby, but it, looks like my Angel

Looks like my baby ... yeah she's gone

Instrumental Bridge

Well I, went out to the main town to, see the train was lost

And I, went to your wedding, and I, saw the veil that you wore

Well I'm looking for my baby, it looks my Angel

Looks like my Angel ... is gone
