Sound Quality CD 5: Good Audience

Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, Missouri, July 11, 1978

CD 5: Let It Rock 2:42/All Down The Line 4:00/Honky Tonk Women 4:17/Star Star 4:29/When The Whip Comes Down 6:39/Beast Of Burden 7:10/Lies 4:39/Miss You 8:40/Just My Imagination 7:54/Shattered 5:50/Respectable 3:55/Far Away Eyes 5:59/Love In Vain 5:37/Tumbling Dice 4:39

Comment: The title and artwork first released as a classic 2 LP in 1978. The venues sampled on the original LP were: St. Louis July 11, 1978, Buffalo, N.Y., July 4, 1978, Greensboro, N.C., June 26, 1978, Oakland, CA, July 26, 1978, and Chicago IL., July 8, 1978. A really nice "best of" effort. The printed color LP jacket was exceptional at the time. The white and yellow record labels were "Ruthless Rhymes, Ltd.". The most fantastic version of Beast of Burden was recorded on this LP, and it was from St. Louis and is now preserved on "pressed" CD. Note: The original vinyl release in each case is BETTER Quality than these audience source tapes! The Soldier Field show was first released on the CD "Speed Freaks" on the Black 'n Blue label. This is the first CD release for Buffalo and St. Louis shows. Nice way for the label to go out.
Who else will possibly relate to vinyl history like this great Stones only CD label??

Comments: This material has been available for years. Cover artwork and 1977 session first released on classic LP in the early Eighties on green "splash" vinyl (see below). Also released on CD on the Greengrass Record label (T102-6854) with same artwork made from the LP. The Longview '81 stuff was released by The Outsider Bird in July, 1989 with titles like: "Unknown Dreams" and "You Know My Dreams". Also by other labels as "Learning The Game" (T204-13970).

The Original LP from "A Stone Alone".

"Timeless '73"

(VGP-373)

Sound Quality: Good to Very Good Audience. Nice audience recording, it gets a little hissy if you crank it up, but don't play too long at high volume.

Performance: Utterly AWESOME. Check Midnight Rambler for the guitar interplay.

Wembley Empire Pool, London, England, September 8, 1973, 1st Show

Comments: The song list of the day will tell you that this was indeed a unique performance with a sound mix that favors the talented lead guitar player at the time. "Accidents Will Happen"

(VGP-370)

Sound Quality: Sensational Studio Stereo !

CD 1: Claudine (Fast version as on the original LP, see my analysis of this song at: http://rollingstonesnet.com/Emotional.html) 3:40/We Had It All 2:54/Let's Go Steady 2:52/I Think I'm Going Mad 5:49/Indian Girl 6:43/Let Me Go I 3:53/Emotional Rescue 6:54/Send It To Me 6:16/Summer Romance 3:52

CD 2: Get Yourself Together 3:13 (3rd version vocal)/You Got The Silver 2:51 (Of course the Jagger vocal version)/Dear Doctor 3:31 (The very familiar Take 1)/Munich Hilton 10:41/Fiji Jim 4:03 (1st version; the count-in version. See my analysis of this song at: http://rollingstonesnet.com/SomeGirls.htm)/The Way She Held Me Tight 4:37/I Need You (Hey, finish this one. C'mon Mick the Stones need a definitive outtake retrospective. The legacy must not lie with "Metamorphosis") 3:39/Do You Think I Really Care 6:11 (See my analysis of this song at: http://rollingstonesnet.com/SomeGirls.htm)/A Different Kind 6:03

Comments: The cover artwork and title taken from one of the most significant outtake LP releases ever issued. The LP was released in 1981 by the Eva Records label, and is arguably one of the top three releases ever for this sort of material; ranking with the likes of "Bright Lights Big City" and "Lonely At The Top". I remember being totally "jazzed" to hear the infamous Claudine through the speakers of my own stereo system at the time. Also released previously on CD as "Accidents Will Happen (Claudine)" Dragonman 204-8508/8509, copied from the LP.

The Original CD release of this title in lessor quality than this recent VGP release.

Comments: San Diego show also released as: "Stoneaged" on World Productions Of Compact Music, "San Diego Sixty-Nine" on TMoQ CD, & "San Diego '69" by The Swingin' Pig - BEST RELEASE (TSP CD 214). Useful to have Philadelphia '69 on CD, but what is the point of releasing an inferior audience recording of San Diego '69 when so many good variations of the Trade Mark recording exist?
Help me out here, maybe I'm missing something...

The Original LP release of the title "2nd Incarnation" on Wizardo Records pictured above. Also San Diego November 10, 1969, but in Very Good to Excellent Quality! "Wizardo's" "Right Hand Man" was a very heavy Stones fan in the day. Of course this LP was a copy of the Trade Mark of Quality LP "San Diego '69" and uses the same pressing plates/matrix numbers as later TMoQ releases.

Comments: Also released as VGP-223 "Shattered In Stuttgart" except in lessor quality with a lot of clapping on the tape. Also released by the "private" CD-R label Coast2Coast as "German Girls" - STILL THE BEST RELEASE!

"German Girls"

And the best cover artwork too!

Comment: All this stuff has been put out many times before. Well, I could tell you all the LP's and CD's, but I don't get paid to do this, and I pay for all my CD's. Expensive rehash at 4CD's, I might add.

Comments: Sorry "Professor" Mick, but Andrea Corr and the Stones don't go together. I'd prefer Sheryl Crow on this number any day. It's all about Soul baby. Very cool cover shot/artwork, and a really nice set of audience recordings. These are good performances. It seems that the guitar players and the LV have put differences aside for these shows.

Comments: The bar is set high for VGP, because when they are not trying to get 6 releases a month out before the current interest in touring Stones wears-off, they are capable of putting out exceptional product. This is particularly true of properly setting the tape EQ on old audience recordings of this band. I've been waiting some time for the VGP Essen 1970 effort because no-one has got it right, but VGP does in this case as they are capable of doing. Now VGP is starting with the remastered source for LA 1972, but it's got that extra bit clarity and balance not found elsewhere.

"Yokohama Forty Licks"

(VGP-345)

4 CD Set

Yokohama Arena, Japan, March 12, 2003

Sound Quality CD 1/2: Very Good Sounboard (Mick's Vocal Monitor - Vocals are up, all other instruments quite a bit lower in the mix) until 3:28 into Band Introductions (Track 12) then it switches to Excellent Audience for Keith's songs and thereafter.

CD 1: Intro 1:58/Street Fighting Man 4:11/It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It) 4:59/If You Can't Rock Me 4:31/Don't Stop 5:14/Monkey Man 4:27/You Got Me Rocking 3:46/Ruby Tuesday 4:09/Loving Cup 4:50/All Down The Line 4:36/Tumbling Dice 5:13
Band Introductions 4:13 - TAPE SOURCE CHANGE HERE at 3:28/
Slipping Away 5:43/Happy 3:44

CD 2: Sympathy For The Devil 7:00/Start Me Up 4:25/Honky Tonk Women 4:26/(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 8:07/Mannish Boy 5:46/When The Whip Comes Down 4:54/Brown Sugar 7:35/Jumpin' Jack Flash 7:44

Sound Quality CD 3/4: Excellent Audience. Noticeable upgrade to VGP-330 "Front Row Box" Disc 3 & 4.

CD 3: Intro 1:43/Street Fighting Man 4:11/It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It) 4:58/If You Can't Rock Me 4:29/Don't Stop 5:17/Monkey Man 4:27/You Got Me Rocking 3:46/Ruby Tuesday 4:09/Loving Cup 4:49/All Down The Line 4:36/Tumbling Dice 5:13/Band Introductions 4:13/Slipping Away 5:43/Happy 3:43

CD 4: Sympathy For The Devil 7:00/Start Me Up 4:25/Honky Tonk Women 4:27/(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 8:07/Mannish Boy 5:46/When The Whip Comes Down 4:54/Brown Sugar 7:35/Jumpin' Jack Flash 7:44

Comments: Between "Front Row" Disc 3 & 4 and this release you can have more variations of the same show than you want or need. The back inlay advertises Mick's Monitor Mix for CD's 1 & 2, but this is not the case. It is only a partial Soundboard on Disc 1, which means you are getting very close to the same thing on Discs 2 & 4; variations of the same show audience recordings. They are not exact copies of one another though (checksums at 622.6 mB & 505.1 mB for each disc respectively). Note that song running times are nearly the same for both discs 2 & 4. It should have been a 3CD set with a bonus CD for the partial Monitor Mix segment.

Who's Gonna Notice The Difference Anyway?!

CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Buyer Beware!

This is some kinda Glyn Johns stunt...

Comments: These are the same old sources ("markers" abound), except for the first 7 songs of CD 3. Millard used a portable Nakamichi stereo cassette deck, AKG microphones, and a wheel chair as his recording mechanism. He was a notorious taper of L.A. Forum shows and unfortunately committed suicide in 1990. Missing of course from these sources is the voice of Ms. A.W. aka "Vicki Vinyl" which you hear on the old LP's. Issued on gold CD's.

"Get Off My Cloud"

(VGP-298)

San Jose Arena, April 20, 1999

Sound Quality: Very Good - Excellent Soundboard. There is some chorusing/phasing in the quiet passages. A bit like the heavy NoNOISE stuff on early TSP releases. Not much of Keith Richards is heard until the small stage set.

"Stones In The Park"

(VGP-296)

Hyde Park London, July 5, 1969

Sound Quality: Very Good Soundboard/Broadcast. "Boomy" in places. There is nothing that can be done to make this show sound any better than the Granada TV sources that have been circulating for years now. The sound system was lousy, the instruments are out of tune, 'nuff said. If you have the TSP release "Hyde Park 1969" (TSP-023-1/2), then there is no need for this one. Careful not to mix this title up with a recent new audience recording that surfaced on a Scorpio CD release (SCRD-001).

Eulogy For Brian Jones/I'm Yours And I'm Hers/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Mercy Mercy/Stray Cat Blues/No Expectations/I'm Free/Down Home Girl/Love In Vain/Loving Cup/Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler(8:47)/Satisfaction/Street Fighting Man/Sympathy For The Devil

"got LIVE if you want it!"

(DFE-8620)

Sound Quality: Good - Excellent Soundboard/Broadcast. First section of songs from old EP of the same title and artwork with added words and music including a great live version of a complete Everybody Needs Somebody To Love. Nice to have early Pollwinners concerts on one CD, but these shows have been released many times already.
