Stereo Rollling Stones-True Stereo From The Sixties

This is a compilation of alternate versions of early Stones songs recorded in TRUE Stereo. The difference in sound quality is like hearing the music in color instead of black & white. See the ABKCO SACD Reissues page on this site for the latest available recordings in True Stereo format. This page is intended to be a historical reference and baseline for archiving the sources of early Rolling Stones stereo recordings. Note that source references made at the time of this page's posting are superceded by available stereo ABKCO remasters.

Stereo Tracks on Commercial Imported CD's

"The Rolling Stones No. 2"

True Stereo Tracks:

Time Is On My Side /What A Shame (Charlie hammers the right channel!) /Down The Road Apiece /I Can't Be Satisfied

The balance of tracks are mono and not electronically reprocessed. "The Rolling Stones, Now!" is also available in Japan and in the US with What A Shame & Down The Road Apiece in stereo, but replace Time Is On My Side with a stereo Heart Of Stone and exclude I Can't Be Satisfied.

"December's Children"

True Stereo:

Look What You've Done/Get Off My Cloud

"Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass)"

 POCD-1964

Heart Of Stone

Also Note: On Japanese version POCD-1056 all tracks are Monaural.

The early dark blue label London LP "Aftermath" is distinctively stereo. It is the first US LP jacket that does not state "Stereo Electronically Re-Processed" and for good reason because the tracks are true stereo masters. The same cannot be said of the original ABKCO US CD releases, which had mono and very narrow stereo tracks. Here is the track-by-track analysis and comparison of the sound quality:

- The True Stereo CD version of Paint It Black is found on the Japanese version of
"Hot Rocks 1" order number P25L 250479. Sitar far right, drums/bass far left, vocal middle
- "Aftermath" is an instrumental extravaganza. By 1966 Brian Jones was tiring of the guitar and is heard mastering any instrument placed in front of him.

"Between The Buttons"

POCD-1966

The import version from Japan POCD-1966 is also recorded in wide true stereo with a very bright and clear mix...and infinitely easier to find!

The commercially available version of this title does not do the music or the musicians justice. The German PolyGrams were limited and have been out of print for years. All tracks on the US CD version of "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (TSMR) are in stereo. The difference between "Aftermath", "Between The Buttons" and TSMR is Andrew Loog Oldham. Perhaps Oldham has rights to certain stereo tracks as producer prior to his TSMR departure. This could be the reason why mono tracks are now found on today's CD versions of well known stereo LP's.

Both "Hot Rocks" and "More Hot Rocks" releases are excellent sources for true stereo Stones, and the most likely versions that you'll come across in the more collector oriented independent record shops in the States. These doubles are issued as separates in Japan and are found in the number series 17/18 &19/20.

"Hot Rocks 1"

Time Is On My Side/Heart Of Stone/Play With Fire/Satisfaction/Get Off My Cloud/Mother's Little Helper/Paint It Black (In Mono on US "Aftermath" CD version)/Under My Thumb

"Hot Rocks 2"

Honky Tonk Women

"More Hot Rocks 1 (big hits & phazed cookies)"

Child of the Moon/It's All Over Now/Out of Time - Crisp finger snapping in the right channel! This is the 3:41 version, so both long & short edits can be found in true stereo on CD.

"More Hot Rocks 2 (big hits & phazed cookies)"

What To Do/I Can't Be Satisfied/Dandelion/We Love You - Unbelievable panning effects. The chain clanking at the beginning "walks" from left to right channel. Jagger's lines call and respond from left-right channels/I Can't Be Satisfied/Lady Jane/Sittin' On A Fence

The "Hot Rocks" releases have many of the stereo songs, but you'll need "December's Children" to get Look What You've Done, and "The Rolling Stones No. 2 (note these are found on the US version also)/Now!" to get What A Shame & Down The Road Apiece. Over the years the Japanese releases have been issued with different packaging and they are found with white cardboard end strips (previously red w/ P25L) under the number series POCD.

There are only two stereo songs on Mad Shadows that are not alternate takes (which I don't count):

Comment: Both are found in mono on the "Metamorphosis" LP from 1975.

"Collector's Only/No. 2"

"Ear Candy!"

(TDR-139)

Tendolar

Inlay notes say: "The "Aftermath" and "Between The Buttons" LP's from the stereo master tape sources which is Polygram-Germany are now yours to enjoy!!!!"

Comment: This statement is indeed a fact as verified by the officially released sources reviewed on this page. CD time limitations did not permit the inclusion of What To Do and Goin' Home on this compilation.

"Strictly Stereo"

(CD-R)

Arcade

It's All Over Now /Time Is On My Side/Heart of Stone/*The Last Time/Play With Fire/Satisfaction/Get Off My Cloud/*19th Nervous Breakdown - This is not the alternate take, but it is definitely an upgrade to other sources previously available/Paint It Black/Mother's Little Helper/Lady Jane/*Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow?/Under My Thumb/Out Of Time/Dandelion/Ruby Tuesday/She's A Rainbow/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man/Honky Tonk Women/Gimme Shelter

Comment: A nice compilation of of true stereo tracks that is also very useful because of the inclusion of three (*) tracks that were previously only available through collector's trading circles.

"Could You Walk On Water"

(CD-R)

Sister Morphine

The Rolling Stones were recorded in multitrack stereo in early recording sessions at Chess Studios in Chicago and RCA Studios in Hollywood. Tracks for Decca #2 and "Rolling Stones Now" have the earliest true stereo material. Early BBC tracks were also broadcast in stereo but this is a bit of a different subject since these tracks have not been officially released. The focus of the arrangement of the music on the newly released CD "Could You Walk On Water?" is based on an unreleased Rolling Stones LP with this working title. The existence of this LP was first written about in the great Roy Carr "Illustrated Record" book published in 1976. The song list for this LP was first listed in the book "The Rolling Stones A to Z" by the knowledgeable Lisa Howard and published in 1983. The track list is accurately reproduced on the Sister Morphine release. Decca wanted nothing to do with a title such as this or the proposed LP cover that would have the Stones pictured on the edge of a lake apparently ready to "walk on water". There is a different CD put out by Vinyl Gang which reproduces the title and cover that was proposed for this record, but the musical content is related to the subject of 1970's outtakes and not the precursor to "Aftermath". This is an alternate shot from the same photo shoot that produced the cover for the US "Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)" compilation. The cover used for the Sister Morphine release is a colorized photo of Keith Richards floating on his back in a swimming pool. A black and white source of this photo is found in David Dalton's masterpiece "An unauthorized biography in words, photographs, and music" published in 1972. Found on page 319. Twice the price of commercial releases is typically commanded of somewhat limited production runs. These prices may justify the risk in cases where the recording has to be "pressed" by an outside source, but not in the case of CD-R's where selling for the most part presents its only risk. In the case of this CD-R label printed covers have been used, the gold Mitsui discs are professionally silk-screened, and special effort has been made to provide the best possible sound. But to quote my old pal Mick Jagger: "keep the price of bootleg records DOWN!".

CD1 (Could You Walk On Water?)

1. 19th Nervous Breakdown - Opening guitar riff in the left channel with rhythm guitar in the far right. Vocal in the middle. This is the alternate take with a slightly different vocal. Jagger rolls the r's in right and emphasizes certain words like "tax", "comes" and "stop". It is also found on the "Dartford Renegades" and "In Stereo" CD's. This is the best quality version of the alternate take with a brighter sound.
2. Sad Day (2:59) - Opening: cymbals left and maracas right. Vocal middle left, drums split the far channels. The track is in "dry" mono on the "London Years" compilation. "Electronically Reprocessed" on the UK LP "No Stone Unturned". It's an RCA 1965 Studio session track, so it is very likely that a true stereo take was cut on the multitrack there but it has never circulated. I would guess that "width" & "exciter" effect has been added to the "Electronically Reprocessed" track to enhance the stereo and provide depth to the highs. Note that the drum and cymbal are split in the main body of the track. This is typical of the bass/treble reprocessing used by London (Decca) to simulate stereo. This one sounds particularly outstanding.
3. Take It Or Leave It - Richards and organ right. Jagger main vocal center. Acoustic guitar and drums in the left channel. This track is found in wide stereo on the Japanese CD "Flowers" (POCD-1967).
4.
Think - Distorted "fuzz" guitar right, acoustic guitar/drums left, vocal middle. Found in wide stereo on German PolyGram and US "Aftermath" CD's. Also on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD on Tendolar.
5.
Goin' Home - Electric guitar/drum/bass/harp left, lead vocal middle, lead guitar & backing vocal right. Found in wide stereo on German PolyGram "Aftermath" CD (Matrix: 820 050-2 01). In "narrow" stereo on the US version of the CD.
5.
Mother's Little Helper - Acoustic guitar/feedback/bass far left, electric guitar far right, vocal middle with reverb. Found in wide stereo on German PolyGram "Aftermath" which is the UK version of the track listing. Also in stereo on the Japanese "Hot Rocks 1" order number P25L 25047.
6.
Sittin' On A Fence - Two lovely guitars split the channels. Rhythm guitar and Harpsichord left with guitar lead lines right. Lead and backing vocals center. This track is found in wide stereo on the Japanese CD "Flowers" (POCD-1967).
7.
Don't You Follow Me - This is the original title of the song per Karnbach and Bernson's "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" book published in 1997. Drum/rhythm guitar left, lead guitar right, vocal middle. This is not an alternate vocal take. Found in wide stereo on the German PolyGram and US "Aftermath" CD's. Also on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD.
8.
Ride On Baby - Harpsichord , lead guitar, xylophone, and bongos right channel. Drums and bass left with vocal in the middle. This track is found in wide stereo on the Japanese CD "Flowers" (POCD-1967).
9.
Looking Tired - Guitar left channel. Piano right channel and bass middle right. Vocal middle. This track first found in stereo on the 3CD "The Black Box" on Yellow Dog Records and more recently on the 4CD-R box "Record Mirror Vol. 1" (the channels are swapped). First released in high fidelity mono on The Swigin' Pig's anniversary issue of "Bright Lights Big City". First released on the Trade Mark of Quality LP "Bright Lights Big City" from an acetate source
10.
Have You Seen You Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow? - This is the alternate vocal /instrumental take in best possible monaural quality. Also found in mono on "The Black Box" on Yellow Dog Records.
11.
Stupid Girl - Guitar right, drums/bass/keyboard left, vocal middle. Found in wide stereo on German PolyGram "Aftermath" CD. In "narrow" stereo on the US CD. Also in stereo on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD.
12.
Lady Jane - Lap Dobro/guitar arpeggio far right, vocal middle, bell & harpsichord (at 1:42) far left. Check out the bell sounds in the opening section of the song! Found in wide stereo on German PolyGram "Aftermath". In "narrow" stereo on the US CD! Also in stereo on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD.
13. Flight 505 - Vocal middle, drums/bass far left, piano/guitar right. Found in wide stereo on the German PolyGram and US
"Aftermath" CD's. Also in stereo on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD.
14.
High And Dry - Mouth harp/guitar right, high hat left, vocal middle. Found in wide stereo on the German PolyGram and US "Aftermath" CD's. Also in stereo on the unauthorized "Ear Candy" CD.

18.
What to Do - Drums/bass/hand claps far left, acoustic & electric guitar far right, vocal middle. Found in wide stereo on the Japanese "More Hot Rocks (big hits & fazed cookies)" POCD-1930, and on the German PolyGram "Aftermath" CD. This track has been brightened up with "exciter" and just a tad of added bass boost. Nicely done.
19.
Long, Long While - Acoustic guitar/drums far left, Keith/Jagger back-ups far right, lead vocal middle. Mono on the Japanese "More Hot Rocks (big hits & fazed cookies)" POCD-1930 and US "singles collection*the london years". The song is in re-processed stereo on the vinyl LP "No Stone Unturned" on Decca which is a fine sonic recording of the song. This track was recorded at RCA studios which means that it is more than likely that a 4-track recording was made of this song.
20.
Who's Driving Your Plane? - A mono take of the great little known B-side. Found in mono on the official release "singles collection*the london years" 3CD box & non-box packages. The song is also in re-processed stereo on the vinyl LP "No Stone Unturned"
