Satisfaction

The live version of this song takes on a different feel than the incredible hit single that catapulted the band into super-stardom. Jagger compliments the late Otis Redding's February, 1966, cover by incorporating some of the styling from this song into the live versions played in 1969. The "Gimme Shelter" movie version is no exception. The lines:

"I can't get me no", and from the improvised section:

"When I get home in the morning..."

Are direct influences of the Redding version of Satisfaction...taken several steps further of course.

The words between the editing room scene and the start of Satisfaction:

"Okay ba-by"

From MSG 11/28/69 2nd, just before the start of Jumpin' Jack Flash.

An inspired performance. Satisfaction was still fresh enough that it wasn't just "going through the motions". Reworked versions of the song from the UK Tour '71 are also very well done.

B. Reference Recordings, Markers and Conclusions:

1. Compared to MSG November 27, 1969 audience source

Line 3: Is a match to Marker #1

Line 5: Is "ridin'" and not "drivin'" in my car.

Line 10: No Marker #2. Is "no, no no no no" and not "a no no no"

Line 11: There is "Whoo", but also a "hey...hey" that is not an exact match to Marker #3.

Chorus #2 & Verse #2 are present

Line 12: No Marker #4. It's "Yeah...yeah" and not "Yeah"

Line 14: Is "girl reaction" and not "satisfaction". Like the studio version!

Line 22: Is "I can't get me no"

Improvised Words: No Marker #5. The improvised section of the song quite different than the "Gimme Shelter" version. Jagger rarely does the same thing twice with respect to improvising or even when it comes to the spoken words between songs from show-to-show.

2. Compared to MSG November 28, 1969 2nd audience source

Line 3: No Marker #1. There is a fourth "and I tried" instead of "and I try try try"

Line 8: Is "some" instead of "a" useless...

Line 9: Is "fire" instead of "unintelligible"

Line 10: There is a Marker #2 present

Line 11: No Marker #3 after Verse #1. Is "hey, a what I say". Jagger does say "Whoo" after Verse #2, which is the Marker #3 match after the missing verse. The splice could have taken place in either location, but the marker indicates that it is at this point.

Chorus #2 & Verse #2 are present

Instrumental Break #1: Is a match to the movie.

Line 12: Marker #4 is present

Improvised Words: Marker #5 is present word-for-word.

Note: The raw energy on this magnificent performance comes straight through even on the audience source.

Conclusion:

Visually, Jagger first appears after the movie title credit wearing the "Uncle Sam" hat and scarf. The opening words are from MSG 11/28/69 2nd as is the footage just before the start of Jumpin' Jack Flash. We don't see the film that actually matches the song until the vocal line starts and things need to get synchronized. The song is a hybrid of two different performances that are spliced between lines 10 and 11. Jagger is seen with no hat or scarf during the first vocal segment. The film splice occurs when the shot switches to Richards at line 10 and then pans back to a dancing Jagger who is now wearing a scarf. The line 10 splice also includes the editing out of Chorus #2 and Verse #2. The first 9 lines of the song are from MSG 11/28/69 1st by process of elimination. Baltimore, Boston, Palm Beach, and Altamont were also checked. Boston 11/29/69 2nd, was a lyrical match, but was eliminated by a "whoo" during the instrumental intro just before the vocal starts in the song. The second part of Satisfaction from line 11 onward matches MSG 11/28/69 2nd.
