The Long Player Vinyl

There are many vinyl LP's that include some or most of the Brussels '73 performance. This section will address some of the early classics.

Key for show sources:

* denotes Wembley, 9/9/73 source

> denotes New York, 7/26/72 source

Unmarked tracks default to the Brussels 10/17/73 (1st Show) source

The earliest recording I can trace is:

"The Rolling Stones: European Tour 1973"

(RS 561-A/B)

Trade Mark of Quality (TMQ)

Comment: This has a rubber stamped title and a green colored record jacket. The disc is on black vinyl with the original TMQ white sideways pig logo on the label. This also has an insert cover of the Jagger "Pen In My Heart" cartoon which is pictured on page 82 of "The Rolling Stones an illustrated record by Roy Carr", 1976. The insert says "Quadraphonic/Stereophonic sound". I don't have the equipment to confirm this. There is some surface noise on this one, but the sound is full.

Side A: Brown Sugar/Happy*/Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/You Can't Always Get What You Want

Side B: Midnight Rambler/Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

"West Germany"

(RS 561-A/B)

Box Top Records

Comment: Made from the same plates as "The Rolling Stones: European Tour 1973" originally issued on Trade Mark of Quality. On purple vinyl with silver sideways pig record labels. Color photo shot of Jagger circa '81 on the cover. The track listing is mislabeled on the record jacket.

"Rolling Stones European Tour '73"

(4180 A/B-RS 1042)

Instant Analysis Records

Comment: Same as: "The Rolling Stones: European Tour 1973" Trade Mark of Quality (TMQ) RS 561-A/B.

"Bedspring Symphony (A Box Lunch and Meat Whistle Live in Concert)"

(TAKRL 1941-A/B)

The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label

Side A: Gimme Shelter*/Tumbling Dice/Brown Sugar/Heartbreaker*/Angie

Side B: Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler/All Down The Line/Street Fighting Man*

Comment: High quality vinyl and great sound. This is an interesting recording because there is an announcer that comes on before each side of the record begins. The music playing while he speaks are pieces of Glenn Miller's "A String of Pearls" and "Moonlight Serenade". He touts the sound of the recording on side 1, and the example of a not so good sounding song is Gimme Shelter from "Burning at The Hollywood Palladium" on TMQ (RS 522) from 6/9/72. This label was obviously not very loyal to it's original roots! A picture of "Bedspring Symphony" can be found on page 152 of Geoffrey Giuliano & Chris Eborn's "The Rolling Stones Album", 1993. The photo for the cover insert is from the opening pages David Dalton's book "Rolling Stones: An unauthorized biography in words, photographs, and music", 1972. The insert covers came on both yellow and green paper shades.

"Bedspring Symphony"

(TAKRL 1941-A/B)

Comment: A deluxe cover edition reissued with yellow "Spunk" labels and a deluxe black and white printed cover with the same artwork by a revived TAKRL.

"Bedspring Symphony"

(SIDE-ONE/TWO)

Comment: Copy of "Bedspring Symphony" TAKRL 1941. Rare.

"Reverse Blues"

(2S 713-A/B & 2S 713-C/D)

2LP Beacon Island Records

Comment: Great color cover stage shot of Keith circa '75. Note that he is playing left handed with a reverse of the negative film, hence the title "reverse". Printed Silver and Black labels on black vinyl. A copy of "Bedspring Symphony" with the original TAKRL matrix scratched out and "On Tour 1978" from Circle Records.

"East and West"

(4508-A/-3)

Excitable Record Works

Comment: A re-release of "Bedspring Symphony" with a printed black and white deluxe cover.

"The Lapping Tongue Set"
(The Spark Behind The Brave New World Tour)

(TAKRL 1941-A/B & TAKRL 1919-A/B: Monique D'ozo)

2LP

Comment: A limited edition of 500 copies with a color gatefold cover of Jagger/Richards. A "homemade" repackaging of "Bedspring Symphony" and "The Jean-Clarke Sonic Mammorial Barbecue" in association with a very cool old independent fan club. Cover graphic is from the July 1975 edition of "Crawdaddy" magazine (Stones '75).

"Keith Richards and His Rolling Stones"

(WRMB 336-A/B/C/D)

2LP Wizardo Records

Gimme Shelter*/Brown Sugar/Happy*/Tumbling Dice/Heartbreaker*/Honky Tonk Women/Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/You Can't Always Get What You Want/Midnight Rambler/All Down The Line/Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*/Wild Horses(the "Gimme Shelter" alternate take)

The following tracks are from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and feature crowd clapping and "live" Jagger vocals:

/Till The Next Goodbye/It's Only Rock 'n Roll (The "sailor suit" version that has a different instrumental track. Possibly the original Ron Wood take)/Ain't Too Proud Too Beg/Con Le Mie Lacrime (As Tears Go By in Italian)

Comment: Ironically this is only one of four Stones releases from a label that ultimately became known for it's Beatles recordings. The other Stones releases were "Da Doo Ron Ron" consisting of outtakes, "The Stones" from Berlin 1970 (there was never a "Great Lost Live Album"), and "2nd Incarnation" San Diego '69. "KR&HRS" came with both green and pink colored inserts. There is a notable splice that becomes a "marker" for this recording, and it will be referenced again. All Down The Line also comes after Midnight Rambler on "Bedspring Symphony", and on this record you can hear a few bars of SFM before it abruptly cuts to RTJ. There are also similarities in the song sequence when this is compared to "European Tour 1973", so this looks like a copy of the two recordings with the different songs from each spliced together to make one release.

"Nasty Music"

(SODD 2-012 A/B/C/D)

2LP, A Singers Original Double Disc (actually a TAKRL release)

Brown Sugar/Happy*/Gimme Shelter*/Tumbling Dice/Heartbreaker*/You Can't Always Get What You Want/Dancing With Mr. D/Angie

Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler/All Down The Line > /(no band intro.) Bye Bye Johnny > /Love In Vain > /Sweet Virginia > /Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

Also reissued as "Nasty Songs"

(24409-A/B/C/D)

Comment: The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label with "Spunk" and "Monique D'ozo" labels, and black and white printed cover shots of Jagger circa '75 and '72. The original SODD matrix has been scratched out and is replaced by 24409-A/B/C/D. A fine sounding analog recording.

"Nasty Songs"

(RS-561-A/B & RS-546-A/B REI)

Box Top Records

Comment: A reissue of "West Germany/European Tour 1973" & "Welcome To New York".

"A Tour De Force"

(2S-701-A/B/C/D)

2LP Saturated Recordworks

Comment: A reissue of "Nasty Music" with a printed color cover.

"Rock Out C*ck Out"

(GLC 211 A/GLC-211-B)

Great Live Concerts

Brown Sugar/Happy*/Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

Midnight Rambler/You Can't Always Get What You Want

Comment: The original version came with printed labels and a large pink insert cover. The song order is incorrect on the cover. The photo used for the cover is from the "Rolling Stones 1973 Tour in Hawaii" concert program. The cover says Live in Europe '73-'74, so maybe they weren't too sure about the year. There is a flaw in the opening track as there is a doubling of Brown Sugar. Two sources played at the same time, but one slightly delayed from the another. When one of the two finally stops you are just left with lousy fidelity.

"Rock Out C*ck Out"

(GLC 211 A/GLC-211-B)

Comment: Same matrix numbers and musical content as above, with plain orange labels. This is a reissue with a small blue insert cover and a corrected track listing.

"Europe '73"

(RS 002-A/B/C/D)

2LP Royal Sound

S1: Brown Sugar/Happy*/Gimme Shelter*/Tumbling Dice/Heartbreaker*

S2: Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/You Can't Always Get What You Want

S3: Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler

S4: All Down The Line/Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

Comment: Deluxe color gatefold cover of the boys in sailor suites from the It's Only Rock 'n' Roll promo video. Limited edition of 500 copies. Lovely multi-color "splash" vinyl. The rough splice that occurs after All Down The Line on "Keith Richards and His Rolling Stones" also occurs on this recording.

"Europe '73"

(ROYAL SOUND RS 002-A/B/C/D)

2LP New Royal Sound

Comment: Reissue of above on "splash" colored vinyl.

"The Rolling Stones In Concert 1973"

(ROYAL SOUND RS PS 002-A/B, RS DS 002-C/D)

Diamond Sound

Comment: Copy of Royal Sound LP "Europe '73" with scratched out matrix number. First 100 copies on dark marbled colored vinyl.

"The Rolling Stones Europe '73 (Volume I)"

(ROYAL SOUND RS 002-A/B)

"The Rolling Stones Europe '73 (Volume II)"

(RS 002-C/D)

Cat Records

Comment: Limited numbered edition of 55 copies! A copy of Royal Sound's "Europe '73". Insert covers with red LP jackets. This label is possibly an OBR derivitive.

"Satellite Delayed"

(1 SBM73-1/2SBM73-2/3SBM73-3/4SBM73-4)

2LP Sound Board Inc.

S1: Brown Sugar/Happy*/Gimme Shelter*/Tumbling Dice

S2: You Can't Always Get What You Want/Dancing With Mr. D/Honky Tonk Women

S3: Midnight Rambler/All Down The Line/Rip This Joint

S4: Heartbreaker*/Angie/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

Comment: The cover information incorrectly lists the venue as Munich, "West" Germany, and even uses the wrong date for that show. The sound on ADTL is noticeably thinner than the rest of this thin sounding recording, because it's mono. There is also a very sloppy splice between MR and ADTL.

"The Boys At The Alamo Story"

(1 SBM73-1/2SBM73-2/3SBM73-3/4SBM73-4)

Musichien Records

Comment: Box reissue of "Satellite Delayed". Made from the same "plates". Back of the box says 'Recorded Live in Arahus, Denmark 1973", but we know better than this...

"Europe '74"

(PP 132 A/B)

Brown Sugar/Happy*/Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/Heartbreaker*

Tumbling Dice/Midnight Rambler/Jumpin' Jack Flash

Comment: Another error in the year of the recording that is probably referencing the year of the first broadcast.

"Jump"

(FLASH-04.90.0118/33 A/B/C/D)

2LP Flashback World Productions

Comment: An identical track list reveals that this is a copy of the "Nasty Music" 2LP.

"Brussels Affair"

(VV•LP.010-A-/B-/C-/D-)

2LP Vinyl Virus

S1: Brown Sugar - horn (re)mix/Happy/Gimme Shelter/Tumbling Dice/Heartbreaker*

S2: Dancing With Mr. D/Angie/You Can't Always Get What You Want

S3: Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler

S4: All Down The Line/Rip This Joint/Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man*

Comment: Same musical content as the CD of the same title. Sides are arranged in the same manner as the "Europe '73" 2LP which most of this disc was copied from; excluding the first three tracks which are from the September 27, 1987 DIR CD.

"The Rolling Stones: Concerts that rock the world - volume 1
(
King Biscuit Flower Hour)"

(RS 9-27-87-A/B)

Brown Sugar/Happy/Gimme Shelter

Comment: From the September 27, 1987 broadcast. On marbled aqua vinyl.

"The Rolling Stones: Concerts that rock the world - volume 2
(
King Biscuit Flower Hour)"

(RS 11-20-88-A/B)

Heartbreaker*/Angie/Honky Tonk Women/Midnight Rambler

Comment: From the November 20, 1988 DIR CD broadcast. On marbled aqua vinyl.

Note: It is important to note where the sides (S :) have been identified on these recordings, because they become important "markers" for identifying a couple of CD sources made from LP's.
