Tattoo You Deluxe Edition
"Lost & Found"
Tattoo You "40th Anniversary" edition bonus CD is a very interesting and entertaining release by the Stones. Here lies the story. The bonus disc like the original LP is a collection of songs ranging from 1972 to 1979. Some with new lyrics and vocals and some with only minor tweaks from the known origianls. All songs have been previously heard in different forms based on the historical releases of unauthorized recordings. Comparisons and the initial surfacing of these songs and instrumentals are described here:
Living in the Heart of Love (4:13) - First surfaced in July 1983 on the LP titled "Lonely at the Top" on Nondon Records, Matrix : Melted out. With the title "Living is a Harder World' and later as "Living is a Harder Love'. The LP was a fantastic outtake compilation and one of the 'must haves' of this genre. It has been re-issued many times on LP's, Picture Disc and CD's.
Recorded: at Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany, February 1974
Note: This sounds like the original lyric and vocal from the time period. There are guitar solos added at the break.
Fiji Jim (4:00) - First surfaced on the fantastic 2LP's “Claudine Accidents Will Happen” EVA Records and “The Paris Rehearsals” EVA Records' in July 1982. These records have professional looking artwork, printed covers and excellent stereo sound. I found these LP's at a small record store in San Jose called 'The Dedicated Record Collector' on my way home from work. It was an unbelievable rush to listen to the music on these records. The 'Fully Finished Outtakes' version adds piano.
Recorded: October 1977at Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris, France. It's a 'Some Girls' outtake!
Note: The vocals and lyrics are new, but not completely. Many of the themes are included in the rewrite by MJ. I deciphered the original lyrics a long time ago. It was very tough and required a lot of repeating over very small portions of the song to pick up a clue. Found here:

See the 'New Edition' lyrics at the bottom of this page.
There are also added guitar parts and a slide guitar (presumably from Ronnie) and harmonica break added. The original solo guitar parts are mixed down.
Troubles a' Comin' (4:16) - A cover of the Chi-Lites B-side song from the 1971 album "Give More Power to the People. First heard on the CD “The Pain of Love” VGP-052 as ‘Break Away’ released in 1995 (4:36), and later on DAC-107 & TSP-CD-274 with the same title. Also found on “All Mixed Up” Outsider Bird Records LP 1998 and later on the DAC-111 CD “All Mixed Up” with the title ‘Chain-Reaction-Groove’. Also on “All Mixed Up” Rabbit Records 2CD RR 024/025 1999 and on "Fully Finished Outtakes".
The musical structure resembles 'Crazy Mama' IMHO.
Recorded: Compass Point Studios, Nassau, January 1979. An 'Emotional Rescue' outtake.
Note: There is guitar soloing added to the track.
Shame, Shame, Shame (4:14) - A cover of the sensational bluesman Jimmy Reed. First surfaced on the title "Could You Walk On The Water" VGP-027 and later on "Place Pigalle" VGP-362 and "Paris Results" DAC-103, disc 2.
Recorded: Pathe Marconi in Paris, France, October 1977. A 'Some Girls' outtake. Also played live at the "Double Door" Chicago, September 1997.
Note: The guitar intro was overdubbed to clean-up the opening lick. Vocal is re-recorded with a major overall sound upgrade as in all the tracks released on the bonus disc.
Drift Away (4:07) - First heard on "Lonely at the Top" LP (see Living in the Heart of Love). The original vocal made famous by Dobie Gray and perfectly covered by The Stones on this track.
Recorded: Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany, February 1974. An 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll' Outtake (released in October 1974).
Note: This sounds like the original period vocal with improved sound.
It's a Lie (4:57) - First heard on "Paris Results" Vol. 2 on Outsider Bird Records released in the 90's and other titles such as "Paris Results" DAC-103, disc 2, 'Fully Finished Outtakes' and 'Silver Linings' DAC-208.
Recorded: Paris, France Summer/Fall of 1979. Sugar Blue the harp player on Miss You is on this track. An "Emotional Rescue" outtake.
Note: Slide guitar added to the 'Fully Finished Outtakes' version. Slide track remains and vocal reworked with really just part of the chorus in-tact for the 'Lost & Found' bonus track.
Come to the Ball (3:41) First heard as the instrumental track ‘Wind Call’ aka ‘Windmill’ on the 1994 release “Could You Walk on the Water” VGP-027, and on the later (2000) reworked re-release “Fast Talking” VGP-237. There are two versions of the instrumental, one heard on VGP-027 and the second with MT on slide guitar on VGP-237 & "Place Pigalle" VGP-362 4CD.
Recorded: Dynamic Sound Studios and later at Village Recorders, Los Angeles, January 27-30, 1973
Note: Now with newly written lyrics and vocal recorded by MJ!
Fast Talking, Slow Walking (5:40) First heard on the 1994 release “Could You Walk on the Water” VGP-027 and on the later (2000) reworked re-release “Fast Talking” VGP-237, track 7 (6:34). Also found on the “Exile on Main St. Alternates” CD (6:36). A fairly complete vocal with call out production by MJ. Also found on “Fully Finished Outtakes” (5:54) with a different guitar opening that includes pull-offs during the opening guitar wah-wah section.
Recorded: Criteria Sound, Miami, Florida, July 1972. There are words by Wyman about this session in his book "Rolling With The Stones" page 401, but he does not specifically mention this song title. A “Goats Head Soup” session release based on the late ’72 dates. ‘Exile’ was released in May 1972.
Note: A newly recorded vocal with lyrics closely derived from the earlier takes.
Start Me Up (4:10) The early reggae version aka ‘Never Stop’. Released on “The Pain of Love” DAC-107 (4:55) with a quick fade out and “Start Us Up” Mighty Diamonds, MD 2009 (2:16), ‘Emotional Rescue Demos’ SODD 125 (4:56) and the 3LP Box Set "It's Only Reggae 'n Roll".
Recorded: First reggae version recorded Paris, France, October-November 1977. The first takes of Miss You also recorded at these sessions. Coproducer, Chris Kimsey says: "Keith was still trying to keep it a reggae song, but Mick was pushing it in the other way". Kimsey claims to have detailed session logs too, so maybe we will have good reading on this some day. The Beatles have "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions", so why not the Stones?
Note: The version on ‘Lost & Found’ has newly recorded vocal track with the nearly complete ‘rock’ lyric over the reggae instrumental. The unauthorized versions are much less developed with an incomplete song hook. They actually sound more reggae than the ‘L&F’ version.
Fiji Jim - New Edition - Lyric Transcription
A Jagger/Richards composition
I'm gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on the plane
Tell him to bring his electric guitar
Tell him to get on the stage
It's been a hell of week, hell of a month
It's been the strangest year
Its all gone by in the blink of a eye
There ain’t no time for tears
Instrumental Break Insert Wood / Richards ‘guitar weave’ here
Yeah, one last chance, one last dance
I got ice in my veins
One last chance, one last dance
We’re gonna drive the crowd insane
We gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Call up Steve and Duane
Get a cat on bass, gonna bust this place
Or else go down in flames
Already drunk four cases of wine
Snort an ounce of C0caine
Got a keg of beer, bring it over here
A six pack more a’ champagne
Instrumental Break Insert Wood / Richards ‘guitar weave’ here
Yeah, one last chance, one last gasp
We got skin in the game
One last chance, one last dance
Gonna drive the crown insane
Yeah, the drums that snap, like a thunder clap
The bass drum mash on the floor
The guitar scream, and the feedback dream
Like you never heard before
Play Superstition, lots of ammunition
We’re out of cigarettes
There’s no intermission, no air condition
For cloths are soaking wet
Instrumental bridge Woody on slide guitar and MJ harmonica
We gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on a plane
Tell him to bring his wah-wah pedal
Drive the crowd insane
Well, he bust two ribs and he bruised his limbs
A took some pills for the pain
He got shaky legs, and his nose was bled
But man he sure could play
I could see you in the fourteenth row
Trying so hard to impress
You took off your dress, and I’m way out of breath
Carry me off this stage …
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
To fade
