Sound Quality: Excellent Soundboard

Channels Reversed - Acetate versions as above.

Stray Cat Blues 3:53/Love In Vain 5:06/Sympathy For The Devil 5:58

Comment: This all comes down to whether this a cleaner acetate than the one that has already been released since the musical takes and mixes are all the same as previously released versions. And the answer is: Yes, overall this is a cleaner disc although not perfect. You're gonna hear a little surface noise and crackles in places, but hey, as acetates go this is cleaner than the previous disc. And as far as the Glyn Johns mix goes you get more guitar and more Keith back-up vocals. Previously released as "Get Your Ya-Yas Out" (RS 1 Sapromo) and "F**k Your Ya Ya's Out!" VGP-160 released with two editions and cover versions, but both of these titles are from a different acetate than this one used for this release. Comment: Same old tape source. The following songs were omitted in order to make this a single CD release: Sympathy For The Devil 1 & 2, Under My Thumb 2 (restarted), Gimme Shelter, & Street Fighting Man. This tape source also released on "In Concert" Idol Mind Productions (small box & 12" box with t-shirt & button), "Altamont Speedway" Shaved Disc. "Beggars Banquet Beta Mixes"

(TCI-0075)

Singer's Original

Sound Quality: Very Good to Excellent Studio Mixing Board.

Sympathy For The Devil 6:24 (sounds like the LP version to me)/No Expectations 4:18 (familiar outtake w/Jagger-Richards intro chatter)/Dear Doctor 3:23 (count-in version)/Parachute Woman 2:16/Jigsaw Puzzle 6:04 (usual mix variation of the official release)/Street Fighting Man 3:17/Prodigal Son 2:54 (stereo foot stomp version)/Stray Cat Blues 4:18/Factory Girl 2:11/Salt Of The Earth 4:50/Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:53 (chatter from One + One movie just before the "Silver Jacket" jam)/Family 4:00/Downtown Suzie 3:45/Stuck Out All Alone 3:22/I Was A Country Boy 4:21/Still A Fool 6:44/Sympathy For The Devil 5:50/Dear Doctor 3:32 (take 1 version)/Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:52 (promo movie alternate vocal version without the yeah-yeahs and extended outro)

Comment: A good compilation of the alternate Beggars Banquet, but you have undoubtedly heard all this material before, i.e. "R.S.V.P." releases, "Trident Mixes" - "Metamorphosis" stuff.

"Training Wheels"

(SOCIAL GRACES 001/002)

Social Graces Label

Sound Quality: Very Good to Excellent Studio Mixing Board. Some speed/pitch issues.

CD 1: Blinded By Love 5:16/Terrifying 5:21/Continental Drift (Instrumental) 6:07/Break The Spell 3:50/Can't Be Seen 5:10/For Your Precious Love 6:27 (same version as previous releases)/Fancyman Blues 5:49 (very cool "stripped" verson, w/different vocal take)/Slipping Away (Instrumental) 5:24

CD 2: Rock And A Hard Place 5:48/Ready Yourself (Keith vocal) 3:37/Sad Sad Sad 3:55/Mixed Emotions 6:51/Almost Hear You Sigh 5:20 (Keith vocal)/Giving It Up (Jagger vocal, sounds like later solo release "Evening Gown") 5:31/Hearts For Sale 4:34/Hold On To Your Hat 4:06 (Same version, different mix than earlier outtake releases)

Comment: These tracks are different than those released a couple of years back as "Steel Wheels Sessions" & "Monitor Mixes". They are more PRIMITIVE and less developed than the first round of releases, and therefore; for me even more interesting than even the alternative mixes that turned-up. These are sound out and call out vocals, really the developmental stages of these tracks. Almost like the "Voodoo Brew" stuff except not quite as good in sound quality.

Sound Quality: Good Audience

CD 1 (41:32): Brown Sugar 4:18/Rocks Off 4:47/Gimme Shelter 5:08/Bitch 5:40/Tumbling Dice 4:01/Happy 2:54/Honky Tonk Women 3:08/Loving Cup 6:44/Torn And Frayed 4:53

Comment: Ventilator Blues is not in the correct set list order. It actually follows Torn And Frayed. Previously released as "Vancouver 72" on Idol Mind Productions, "Vancouver First Night" on Off Beat Records, and "Vancouver First Night" SODD. Note the rare first night try-outs of rare live "Exile" tracks.

"The Great Lost 1972 Live Album"

(SODD-016-G)

Singer's Original

Tarrant County Center, Fort Worth, Texas, June 24, 1972 2nd Show

Sound Quality: Very Good to Excellent Stereo Soundboard. There is a sound drop-out in the first 2:00 of Midnight Rambler. Some chorusing, maybe from de-noise.

Performance: Bloody Sensational.

CD 1: Brown Sugar 3:52/Bitch 4:41/Rocks Off 5:08/Gimme Shelter 5:50/Don't Lie To Me 2:39/Love In Vain 6:25/Sweet Virginia 5:02/You Can't Always Get What You Want 8:01/Tumbling Dice 4:36/Midnight Rambler 11:49/Band Introductions 1:26/Bye Bye Johnny 3:38/Rip This Joint 2:16/Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:41/Street Fighting Man 4:28

Bonus CD-R

"Philedelpha Special" - The 2LP Swingin' Pig version.

Sound Quality: Very Good Stereo Soundboard.

CD-R (Bonus): Brown Sugar 3:42/itch 4:13/Rocks Off 4:10/Gimme Shelter 6:00/Happy 3:42/Tumbling Dice 5:22/Love In Vain 6:31/Sweet Virginia 4:47/You Can't Always Get What You Want 7:58/Midnight Rambler 11:45/All Down The Line 4:00/Rip This Joint 2:18/Jumping Jack Flash 3:25/Street Fighting Man 4:08

Comment: I've played this thing a 1000 times. The running order is seemless, the songs performed to perfect reckless abandon. Taylor conjures sounds from his guitar on Midnight Rambler that have never been heard before and surely will never be heard again. Well, if this wasn't "The Great Lost Live Album", it should have been. Of course the Tarrant County 2nd Show soundboard has been released before as "Fort Worth Express" Vinyl Gang Product (VGP-205), "A Hard Shot To The Body" Super Sonic (SS200016), and "How's Your Lungs" Stones Of Fire (SDF 8002) in the same sound quality. The photo is from Long Beach, CA 1972.

Comment: There are extra talking words here between some of the songs that have otherwise been edited for DIR broadcast and/or not heard on other unauthorized releases. Most notable is a security guard scolding after Star Star for telling fans to sit down when they are not blocking the aisles. Only one of three incidents like this that I can recall hearing in live performances over the years.

The official CD version of this well known 1973 LP is very hard to find. It was a limited Mercury/PolyGram release made in W. Germany (order number 832 128-2). Also previously released on the unauthorized "Every Story Tells A Picture" CD. The source of this recording is Wolfgang's Vault:

Maybe the Faces should upgrade the original live release as this CD has if they are planning a rumoured tour...

"Sticky Fingers: The Alternate Album"

(No Matrix)

Diamond

"Sticky Fingers" tracks were mostly recorded at Jagger's house Stargroves with the Rolling Stones Mobile Unit (truck) March through May 1970, with finishing work taking place at Olympic Studios London.

Sound Quality: Very Good to Excellent Studio.

Brown Sugar (Earliest known version) 3:43/Sway (Keith backing vocal mix) 3:26/Wild Horses (Acoustic mix like the Gimme Shelter movie) 5:29/Good Time Woman (Early version of Tumbling Dice) 3:15/Silver Train (Alternate take) 3:25/You Gotta Move (Mono reverb mix) 2:32/Bitch (Mono mix) 3:38/I Got The Blues (Mono mix) 3:38/Sister Morphine (Album version, L-R channels are switched) 5:24/All Down The Line (Acoustic rehearsal version) 4:19/Travellin' Man (Outtake Oylmpic Studios, October 17-31, 1970) 5:57/Potted Shrimp (Instrumental Outtake Olympic Studios, October 17-31, 1970) 4:10/Alladin Story (Instrumental Outtake Olympic Studios, July 20, 1970) 3:56/Leather Jacket (Instrumental Outtake Olympic Studios, June 22, 1970) 3:28/Wild Horses (I have never believed that this one was recorded with any Rolling Stones gutarists IMHO) 1:38/Wild Horses (Alternate slide guitar take) 5:22/Brown Sugar (Alternate rhythm guitar version) 3:48/Brown Sugar (Alternate lead guitar version) 3:48/Brown Sugar (Mono single mix) 3:51/Let It Rock (Leeds mono live March 13, 1971) 2:36

Comment: Digpack with altenate Spanish cover. Same ol' stuff. Accurate collection of "Sticky Fingers" era tracks.

"2120 South Michigan Avenue"

(2120 SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE)

Comment: The concept here is a collection of Chess Studio sessions with the liner notes going as far as to imply that these sides were intended for a Chess release for a re-signed Rolling Stones who had considered abandoning Pop Music for the pure Blues! Is this the lost Blues album from 1964 or are the Stones paying tribute to their significant influences at the end of their first US tour in '64? Well thought out compilation.

"Time Trip Volume 5"

(TIME TRIP V5 BAD WIZ-SNB)

Bad Wizard (Scorpio)

Go Home Girl 2:24 (De Lane Lea Recording Studio Nov. 14, 1963)/Mercy Mercy 2:44 (Chess Studio Nov. 8, 1964)/Key To The Highway 3:23 (Chess Studio Nov. 8, 1964)/Leave Me Alone 1:55 (Regent Sound Studio Nov. 20-22, 1963)/Suzie Q 1:52 (Regent Sound Studio Feb. 5, 1964)/Goodbye Girl 2:12 (Chess Studio Nov. 8, 1964)/It Should Be You 1:43 (Regent Sound Studio Nov. 20-21, 1963)/That Girl Belongs To Yesterday 2:04 (Regent Sound Studio Nov. 20-21, 1963)/Con Le Mie Lacrime 2:57 (IBC Studio March 15, 1966)/Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 2:31 (Rough mix) (RCA Hollywood Studio Aug. 3-11, 1966/Paint It Black 2:20 (Instrumental backing track) (RCA Hollywood Studio Mar. 8-9, 1966) /Lady Jane 3:09 (This is a mono instrumental, so I thought it might be a faked alternate track, but it includes the harpsichord which cuts in on the alternate channel) (RCA Hollywood Studio Mar. 8-9, 1966)/Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 2:37 (Alternate Mix I) (RCA Hollywood Studio Aug. 3-11, 1966/Paint It Black 3:18 (This true stereo mix also found on the SACD remasterd release of "Aftermath" on ABKCO) (RCA Hollywood Studio Mar. 6-9, 1966) /19th Nervous Breakdown 3:53 (Alternate stereo studio vocal version I in better quality than "Time Trip Vol. 4" or OBR's "Alternates") (RCA Hollywood Studio Dec. 3-8, 1965) /19th Nervous Breakdown 4:01 (Alternate stereo studio vocal version II) (RCA Hollywood Studio Dec. 3-8 1965)/The Last Time 3:25 (Same left instrument - right vocal true stereo version now in excellent quality) (RCA Hollywood Studio Jan. 17-18 and Feb. 17, 1965)/Heart Of Stone 2:57 (This true stereo version can be found in better quality on the commercial SACD release "Hot Rocks 1964-1971" on ABKCO) (RCA Hollywood Studio Oct. 27-Nov. 2 1965)/Going Home 1 0:19/Going Home 2 0:06/Going Home 3 11:19 (RCA Hollywood Studio Dec. 3-8, 1965)

Comments: Leave Me Alone, Goodbye Girl, It Should Be You, & That Girl Belongs To Yesterday previously released on the Bad Wizard release "How Britain Got The Blues". The studio take of Key To The Highway is alone worth the price of admission. This would have been a great bonus track on say "12X5" when ABKCO remastered the catalog as either SACD or DSD. Sound upgrades for all true stereo tracks not already issued in ABKCO remastered products. This would include three tracks not found on stereo in the current ABKCO remaster catalog: The Last Time, 19th Nervous Breakdown, and Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow.

A metal EMI test acetate of Suzie Q from my collection.

"Sheep-Dip-Blues"

Originally Released on an Outsider Bird Records LP (RS-032 A/B)

CD-R: Waiting On A Friend (Take II) 3:34/Black Limousine (Take II) 3:17/Los Trios Guitaros 3:12/Stay Where You Are 1:36/Brown Leaves (Take II) 2:42/Broken Head Blues 2:09/Golden Caddy (Take I) 3:08/Guitar Lesson 3:52/Fiji Jim (Take I) 3:55/Up Against The Wall 3:59/Brown Leaves (Take III) 6:03/Heaven 5:17/Piano Instrumental 4:37/Sheep-Dip-Blues 0:33/Broken Toe 1:52

Comment: Why would anyone re-release "Paris Results" Volume 1? Even Outsider Bird reissued the tracks that couldn't be found elsewhere in better quality ("Lonely At The Top" LP/CD) on a follow-up release called guess what? "Better Results". The problem is that the tape speed is fouled-up on the recording. Tape speed = pitch, so it sounds terrible. Maybe it's best to just find "Place Pigalle" from Vinyl Gang (VGP-362). All the best Paris studio work in one place on 4CD's. For the record; CD 1 also released as "Paris Results" on Outsider Bird (OBR 305-CD-016) & "Place Pigalle" Save The Earth (STE 015). CD 2 also released as "Paris Results Vol. 2" on Outsider Bird (OBR 305-CD-019) & "Place Pigalle Vol. 2" Save The Earth (STE 024). Maybe having the Outsider Bird LP only "Sheep-Dip-Blues" on CD-R is the most useful thing about this release.

The original rare "Live From Detroit 1969" CD release. Photo is an English "Hells Angel" (the safer breed of cat) from Hyde Park, July 5. 1969.

Comment: Broadcast by pioneer underground FM San Francisco radio station KSAN "the jive 95" and Bill Graham. Also released as "Hangout" World Production Of Compact Music (D 047-2), "Oakland '69" Audifon (AF 005), & "Oakland Sixty-Nine" Vinyl Gang Product (RS-692). This is of course the same show as the infamous "Liver Than You'll Ever Be" but this one is recorded from the audience. Detroit 1969 also released on the CD "Live From Detroit 1969" on the Minotauro Record label (1405-A). Detroit CD sources are rare, so again the CD-R could make this a useful release.

"Welcome To New York"

(SODD-022-SS & bonus CD-R)

Singer's Original (Double Disk)

Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, July 26, 1972

Sound Quality: Excellent Soundboard

CD: Love In Vain 6:51/Sweet Virginia 4:41/You Can't Always Get What You Want 7:43/All Down The Line 3:58/Midnight Rambler 12:14/Band Introductions 0:47/Bye Bye Johnny 3:19/Rip This Joint 2:17/Jumping Jack Flash 3:14

Comment: The track listing is in the correct running order of 1972 shows, unlike both REI and non-REI versions of the Trade Mark of Quality LP releases. The Swingin' Pig recording is made from an TMoQ REI LP source. The splice at part 3 of Midnight Rambler has also been cleaned-up in the best possible way. The opening tracks on this one have too much noise reduction for my taste. The silent passages are somewhat "colored". Overall noise reduction leaves it a bit compressed. Less high end (treble) than The Swingin' Pig CD but also less overall impact with respect to color added to the sound by the NONOISE sound reprocessing used by TSP. You can best assess the sound impact with the guitar tuning bits in between the songs. Listen for pitch and color. Maybe this is the best effort yet at bringing the classic analog recording into the CD age. See this web site for the whole story on this one at:
